If anyone thinks Virtual Reality (VR) as a core concept is modern in terms of the core idea, one has to search historical archives of innovations from around the world. Ideas recycle always based on advancement of tech to suit modern needs, and many times are just marketed to suit the modern needs and suit to modern ignorance by new hypes.
Here is one documented version of a stereoscopic display from Oct 1852 where the base concept of stereoscopic depth was illustrated using this device. Further, the current glasses free auto-stereoscopic 3D displays which are based on lenticular lens principles as well first appeared in their basic format as 3D photographs, first in 19th century in France. 1940s and the decades saw massive innovations in 3D head mounted systems and glasses free systems, including 3D cameras, lenses, lenticular screens, printing, and the current 3D systems still work on the same fundamentals established then.
There is nothing absolutely new when it comes to ideas as ideas re-appear from time to time with modern incarnations. Hence, do not stay fixated on how novel an idea is fundamentally because novelty lies in how the core concept has been adapted with new improvements / innovations to the core concept to suit the modern requirements.
Fundamentally all the XR display hardware boils down to the below basic three components.
1. Source of imagery - projector, LCD, OLED screens (super small sized if near eye displays)
2. Projection medium - some type of special glass / plastic / new materials and coatings / gratings to bounce off the light to show the projection (optics) either remotely like on tabletop displays or near eye displays.
3. Processor and related ecosystem to drive the software
The more miniaturize you make all of these three components (for near eye hardware), more easy it becomes to deploy in consumer use cases. All of these three hence deal with physics and material science innovation at its core and requires incredible investments to make fundamental new changes, and also high costs.
You can also use much cheaper alternatives in terms of materials to drop down the quality drastically that does not actually look good. Optics is all about materials. Quality optics costs high money.
